Sydney Writers’ Festival: Day One by Dorothy Tonkin

Hey all, it’s Dot here, the Children’s and YA Publicist at Random House. I have just had three days of awesome sessions with three of our authors – Jacqueline Harvey, Deborah Abela and Michael Pryor. Each talk was fantastic but here are the highlights . . .

Jacqueline Harvey revealed her tips and secrets for writing a children’s book. Did you know that her latest series – about a charming miniature heroine named Alice-Miranda – was written after three years of languishing in the writers’ doldrums? During this time nothing was accepted by publishers despite the fact she had a CBCA honour  book under her belt. How did Jacquie turn things around? ABC Radio National’s  Book Show, which interviewed Jacquie on the day, might disclose some of her secrets – stay tuned for tuning-in details!

Deb Abela stunned us all with the news that her nana used to lunch with her dead uncle. Yep, Deb’s grandmother saw ghosts and she was the inspiration for Deb’s book The Remarkable Secret of Aurelie Bonhoffen. Deb also wowed primary school kids with her animated What If? Presentation which pulled one lucky student on stage to be a super spy just like Max Remy.

Michael Pryor had his secondary school audience in stitches when he admitted to seeing Ninjas in his local park. And knights in shining armour. Where is this park you ask? All Michael will reveal is that it’s near his house and he walks there when he needs inspiration for his steampunk series The Laws of Magic. Michael’s latest book, Hour of Need, which was released this month, was a popular buy at the book stall and with fans in the signing queue. He even had students from Queensland travel down especially for his talk – how impressive is that?
